HOW TO MAKE EDIBLE SLIME WITH MARSHMALLOWS

To say slime is a “trendy” child’s activity would be an understatement. Slime is a favorite pastime of kids (and adults) everywhere!

Of course, that means slime will definitely entertain your children for an afternoon. Plus slime isn’t just for fun, there are also developmental benefits to playing with slime!

Slime falls into the sensory play category, which is extremely important for cognitive, emotional, linguistic, and creative growth.

With so many benefits of slime, it's a bummer that many slime recipes aren't safe for eating. In turn, this usually means young kids can't play along.

Luckily, you'll be pleased to know that there are plenty of taste-safe slime recipes!

I've been creating, playing with, and yes, even eating edible slime with my toddlers for a long time, and I actually already have a taste-safe chia seed slime recipe

However, I've also been experimenting with this candy slime for a while and I love the fluffy texture!

I've finally perfected it, so today I'm sharing this fun edible marshmallow slime recipe! If you want to make the perfect slime, this is where you can do just that!

Here's how it's made:

Instructions

Step One: Melt the marshmallows

First, take out a large microwave-safe bowl and pour the marshmallows inside.

Microwave on high for 30 seconds at a time, mixing with a rubber spatula between each round. After every 30 seconds in the microwave, the marshmallows will get smoother and better combined.

As they get closer to being totally melted, use 10-second intervals on the microwave instead. You don’t want the marshmallows to burn!

Step Two: Mix in the powdered sugar

Once the marshmallows are melted, slowly add the powdered sugar. I don’t recommend pouring a whole bag in at once!

Instead, add ½ cup of powdered sugar in at a time until you’ve added 1 entire bag (2 lbs), mixing in each portion before adding the next.

The mixture will stiffen as you continue. When the mixture has reached your desired consistency, stop adding powdered sugar.

Step Three: Stir in coconut oil and food coloring

Next, stir in your coconut oil. This will help with that sticky texture!

Then, add a few drops of food coloring and combine. Keep adding drops and stirring until you have the color you’re looking for!

Bonus Tip: If you want colored slime but don’t want to add food coloring, use colored marshmallows instead!

(Worried about getting food coloring on your hands? We’ve all been there! Here’s exactly how to get food coloring off your hand!)

Step Four: Knead the mixture until well combined

Once you mix as much as you can with the spatula, cover your hands in powdered sugar and knead the mixture in the bowl.

Do this until everything is well combined and smooth!

Step Five: Sprinkle your play surface with powdered sugar

Before you let the kiddos dig in, take a little minute to prep your play space. Sprinkle a generous dusting of powdered sugar over your countertop or tabletop. This creates a smooth, non-stick surface that keeps the marshmallow slime from clinging to everything. Trust me, it saves A LOT of time cleaning up later.

A little prep goes a long way to making the playtime experience even more fun (and less sticky for everyone involved!).

Step Six: Play!

Now comes the best part. It’s time for sensory play! Invite your kids to dust their hands with powdered sugar and dive right on in. The stretchy, squishy texture of marshmallow slime makes it super fun to touch, stretch, pull, and squeeze.

Encourage them to explore with all their senses: watch how it moves, listen to the silly squishy sounds, smell the sweet marshmallow scent, and of course, taste a little if they’re curious. That’s the magic of taste-safe play! I believe that it opens the door for full, hands-on exploration.

That said, don’t forget that while this activity is taste-safe, it’s still LOADED with sugar. Kids may be tempted to snack on it more than play with it, so keep an eye out to avoid tummy aches later. We really don’t want that! A little nibble is fun, but the real joy is in the play!
